Scientific Linux Fermi v5.x Upgrade Steps

Upgrade Instructions

  • Network Upgrade: Note that the very first part of the upgrade is done in text mode. This is because we simply cannot fit the graphical upgrade onto the initial boot image. Once you connect to the installation server it will try to startup the graphical upgrade. Until that point, here are a few things to note.
Use the Tab/Alt-Tab keys to navigate between elements.
    The <space> key selects/deselects items.
  • CDROM Upgrade: The first cdrom is bootable if your BIOS is configured to boot from cd-roms.
  • Text Upgrade: For either network or cd-rom upgrade, type in 'http text' and then return at the very first step.

Click on Image for full size image.
Click on Section Name for detailed instructions.
Sections marked with a ** have default screens inside their section.

Bootup Screen (Enter) or [http text](Enter)

Language Selection(Shouldn't see normally)(Network install only) [OK]

Keyboard(Shouldn't see normally)(Network install only) [OK]

Installation Method(Shouldn't see normally)(Network install only) Pick installation method then [OK]

Configure TCP/IP(Network install only)

Either:
  • Choose DHCP
  • or
  • Enter the IP address (from your Network Manager)
    Netmask (from your Network Manager)
Default gateway (from your Network Manager)
Primary nameserver (from your Network Manager)
[OK]

HTTP, NFS, or FTP Setup(Shouldn't see normally) (Network install only)
You should point your machine to your network installation server.
Depending on your network installation server, the path may be different. You should check to make sure you put the correct path in.
We are using i386 as an example, depending on what you are installing, you can replace that with x86_64. But you must have gotten your installation media from the appropriate images area, because an i386 network install cd will not work with x86_64 install directory, or vice versa.

HTTP server name: linux01.fnal.gov
Scientific Linux 5x (Fermi) directory: /linux/slf5x/i386

NFS server name: linux.fnal.gov
Scientific Linux 5x (Fermi) directory: /export/linux/slf5x/i386

NOTE: FTP Installs are *not* recommended for SLF5
FTP server name: linux.fnal.gov
Scientific Linux 5x (Fermi) directory: /linux/slf5x/i386
[OK]

At this point, the installation try's to startup the graphical installation, unless you are doing a text installation. If for some reason the installation is unable to startup the graphical mode, then it will run the installation in text mode. Although this is a rare occurance, it does happen from time to time.
At this point, you can also take out the network install cd if you wish, it is not used again.
